Four hundred and forty-one millimetres, and four hundred and eighty-two

The first bullet prints both, and the gap between them is the shelf.

482 mm is the outer width, which is the 19-inch convention with the mounting flanges included. 441 mm is the flat part, the surface a device actually stands on.

Forty-one millimetres is not a rounding error. It is the width of a small power brick, or the difference between a NAS sitting square on the tray and a NAS sitting half on the flange. Five of the seven shelves in this hub publish one dimension line and leave the reader to guess which of the two it is.

The depth is the same figure either way, 250 mm, and that is worth knowing too.

Fifteen kilograms, and where that puts it

The fifth bullet gives the load as up to 15 kg on high-grade steel.

On this shelf the fixed shelves run 15, 16, 20 and 110 kg, and the sliding one runs 5. So this is the bottom of the fixed range, and the third bullet is honest about the company it expects to keep: routers, modems, AV accessories, mini-PCs, NUCs, KVM switches, power supplies, NAS units.

Every one of those is a light object. Nothing on this list is a tower server or an uninterruptible power supply, and the shelf that carries those on this shelf is four-post and costs three times as much.

Fixed to the rails, and nothing about how

The second bullet says the shelf is fixed to the 19-inch profile rails and needs one rack unit.

It does not say whether that means the front rails alone or front and rear. That distinction is the main thing separating one shelf on this shelf from another — a cantilever shelf hangs off the front and a four-post shelf is carried at both ends, and the load ratings on this shelf differ by a factor of seven between the two arrangements.

Two of the seven listings here name their support type in words. This is one of the five that does not, and its 15 kg figure is the only clue.

The requirement on the cabinet

Then a sentence that is easy to skim past: this shelf fits cabinets from 450 mm depth upwards.

A 250 mm shelf that requires a 450 mm cabinet is an unusual pairing, and it means 200 mm of cabinet sitting behind the tray. That space is not wasted if the cables from whatever stands on the shelf are going to occupy it, which they will. But it does rule out the shallow cabinets: the cabinets hub of this site has one at 180 mm and one at 300 mm, and this shelf is not for either.

Before ordering

Check the cabinet depth against 450 mm before anything else. Measure the device against 441 mm rather than 482. And weigh it: 15 kg is generous for a router and thin for anything with a mains transformer and a spinning disc in it.

It is stocked on the British Amazon store as well, in that country’s own currency. The range above leaves those out: it counts euro stores and no others.
