A card reader is judged on the machine side rather than on the card side. The first figure is the host interface: the USB generation the reader publishes with its rate in gigabits per second, and the connector — Type-A, Type-C, or a body carrying both. A reader whose slots are capable of more than its host link is limited by that link, and this is the commonest reason a quick reader disappoints. Internal readers that mount in a desktop bay are a separate branch, connecting to a header on the motherboard and stating which one. The second question is the slot layout: how many slots, which formats each accepts, and — the line people miss — whether two slots can be read at the same time or whether the reader multiplexes them, so that inserting a second card interrupts the first. Multi-slot readers say so plainly when they support simultaneous access and say nothing when they do not. The third is the protocol support the reader publishes, since a slot that physically accepts a card does not necessarily support the faster bus modes that card was built for, and the reader's published list is the reference rather than the shape of the socket.
