The subject of this site, and how it is funded
NetVerdict is an independent editorial site about the hardware that carries traffic around a home or a small office and holds the files at the end of it — mesh systems, Wi-Fi routers, wireless access points and repeaters, network switches and PoE switches, PCIe network cards and USB network adapters, powerline kits, print servers, KVM switches, cable testers, NAS enclosures and the drives built for them, internal and external hard drives, NVMe, SATA and portable solid-state drives, and uninterruptible power supplies — and the patch cables, patch panels, network cabinets, keystone modules, RJ45 plugs, crimping tools, SFP modules, fibre leads, drive and NVMe enclosures, docks, flash drives, card readers, replacement battery packs, surge-protected strips, rack shelves, trunking and rack fan panels that go with them. It does not cover docking stations or USB hubs, video cabling and equipment for a television, or memory cards themselves, all of which are covered elsewhere; nor equipment intended for data centres; nor telephone systems; nor any work on fixed mains wiring. Class figures, port speeds and standards, PoE classes and power budgets, PCIe generations and lane counts, form factor codes, capacities, sequential and random figures, TBW ratings, MTBF statistics, workload ratings, VA and watt ratings, dimensions and stated load figures published by manufacturers are reported as such, with their unit written as published, with their source named, and never derived by us. In particular, a capacity is reported as the maker publishes it, since a terabyte counted as a thousand billion bytes and a tebibyte counted in units of 1024 are two conventions for one number of bytes, and it is never converted from one to the other. Nothing here replaces a manufacturer's own instructions, nor the wiring and electrical rules of the country you are in, which govern in particular how a cabinet is earthed, how a sealed lead-acid battery is transported and disposed of, and what may be connected to a mains socket — and two statements are repeated on every page that touches them: a RAID level or any other redundancy arrangement is a way of carrying on through a drive failure and is never presented here as a backup, since it does not survive a deletion, a hostile encryption, a theft or a fire, and a copy held on separate hardware elsewhere is a different arrangement altogether. TBW, MTBF and warranty length are three separate published quantities, reported here as the declarations they are, and none of them is presented as the lifespan of any particular unit.
