The best network cabinets for 2026

A cabinet is bought on internal dimensions, and the one that catches people out is depth. The 19-inch mounting width is fixed by convention and the height in rack units of 44.45 mm (1.75 in) each is printed on every listing, but the usable depth between the front and rear mounting rails is what decides whether a switch with a rear-facing power inlet lets its door close. Wall cabinets are shallow by design and a great deal of equipment simply does not fit them; floor cabinets are deep and occupy the footprint of a wardrobe. Read then the mounting rails: two posts or four, adjustable in depth or fixed, and whether the holes are square for cage nuts or threaded. Ventilation follows — a mesh or louvred door moves air on its own, a solid glass door looks tidier and does not, and roof cutouts for fans are published with their dimensions. Access counts for more than it seems inside a cupboard, and a removable side panel or a hinged wall frame turns an impossible cabling job into an ordinary one. The stated load rating is published as a static figure, and a cabinet filled with drives approaches it sooner than expected. Finally the entries: brush strips or knockouts top and bottom, an earth stud, and a lock. Fitting deep equipment with its cables behind

The usable internal depth is published in millimeters as a mounting depth by four of the eight listings here, all Tecmojo, and a fifth gives a maximum depth without saying inside or outside, and it is the dimension that derails the most projects. A switch fits in three hundred millimeters; a redundant power supply, a short server or simply the bend radius of the patch leads behind it need twice that.

The stated load rating is published in kilograms by seven of the eight listings here. A UPS alone accounts for a good share of the total, and on a wall cabinet the question is not the cabinet but the wall: the fixings take it all, as an overhang.

Who buys what, across network cabinets

A wall box for a home installation: Two or three units is enough for a router, a switch and a patch panel. Depth remains the thing to check, because a wall box is almost always shallower than people imagine.
A floor cabinet for a small business: There the number of units and the depth count together, and free space has to be allowed for patching. A cabinet filled to the brim cannot be altered without stripping it out.

What depth should be allowed for?

What is a rack unit?

A standard height of one and three quarter inches, about forty-four and a half millimeters. It says nothing about depth or width, which are two separate questions.

What is the stated load worth on a wall cabinet?

It is worth something for the structure, not for your wall. Four listings here publish it; the fixing, the plugs and the nature of the partition decide the rest, and a plasterboard wall will not take a UPS.

Does the cabinet need extraction?

That depends on what runs inside and on the door. A solid door with no extraction lets the temperature climb well past what the equipment accepts.

Can a cabinet be made taller later on?
