The best patch cables for 2026

A patch cable is chosen on three lines of its own printing, and the sheath carries all three. The category comes first — Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, and the Cat 7 and Cat 8 names above them — and it names the frequency the cable is specified to, which is what a given port speed over a given distance depends on. Across a few metres between a switch and a machine the practical distance between the middle categories is smaller than the labels imply; over long runs at multi-gigabit speeds it is not. The second line is the conductor: solid copper belongs in fixed runs terminated into a panel, stranded copper is what a patch cable should be because it survives being coiled and moved, and cable described as copper-clad aluminium is a different material with different behaviour, normally identified only in the small print.
