The switch on the case

Nineteen listings sit in this lot, across three shelves. One of them can be made read-only with a switch.

The fifth bullet describes an integrated write protection, activated and deactivated by a switch on the enclosure.

It sounds like a small thing and it changes what the object is for. A drive that cannot be written to is a drive that survives being plugged into a machine that decides to index it, reorganise it, or quietly write a hidden folder to it. It is what you want when the contents are an archive, a disc image, a set of files somebody else needs to read, or anything where the copy on the drive is the copy that matters.

It is also protection in the other direction. Plugging a drive into a computer you do not know is a risk taken every time, and a hardware switch is the one form of protection that no software on the far side can talk its way past.

One cable, two ends

The fourth bullet names the lead, which is more than four of the six enclosures on this shelf do: a combined cable, Type-C to Type-C and Type-C to Type-A.

That covers both kinds of computer in one object, which is the practical version of the adapter another listing here supplies. One lead rather than a lead and a small part to lose.

What it cannot do is change the rate of an old socket. Ten gigabits is what the enclosure offers; a Type-A port on an older machine will produce what that port produces, and the chain runs at the speed of its slowest link.

Two terabytes

Here is the limit, and it is the sharpest one on this shelf.

The first bullet gives the ceiling as 2 TB. Two enclosures here state 8 TB and two state 4 TB. Drives above 2 TB are ordinary now, and anybody moving a large one into an external case should read this line before anything else on the page.

The lengths are handled loosely too: common sizes up to 2280, without the individual designations that four other listings on this shelf print out.

The aluminium, and what is not said about it

The title says aluminium. No bullet says thermal pad, heatsink or fin.

Aluminium is a material and a thermal arrangement is a path — from the controller, across whatever fills the gap, into the metal, out to the air. Without the middle part named, the case is a good conductor that may or may not be touching the thing it is meant to cool.

For a drive used in short bursts this rarely shows. For a long sustained copy it is the difference between the rate holding and the drive slowing itself down.

Before ordering

Check the drive is 2 TB or under, because that is the ceiling and it is the lowest here. Ask whether a thermal pad is fitted. And if the write-protect switch is the reason you are buying, that is a good reason — nothing else in this hub has one.

It is stocked on the British Amazon store as well, in that country’s own currency. The range above leaves those out: it counts euro stores and no others.

The Italian Amazon price runs past 1.6× the cheapest store. A gap that size normally marks a reshipper and not a seller in the country, so that listing stays out of the range above.
