Behind the same connector there are cables wired for ten gigabits, cables wired for five, and cables that carry power and almost no data at all — and none of that can be told by looking.

And the note that says what will not fit

M.2 SATA drives and M.2 NVMe drives share a shape. One enclosure on this shelf takes the SATA kind and no NVMe; this one takes NVMe and no SATA. A fast drive in a sealed case produces heat with nowhere to go, and the pad is the only path from the chip to the metal; without one, the aluminium is decoration and the drive slows itself down to survive. The bullet calls the arrangement active cooling, which is the maker’s own phrase for a case with no fan in it.
