Free-blowing, which is the honest word

Two words in the third bullet make this the best-documented cooling unit in this hub.

A fan tested with nothing in front of it moves more air than the same fan bolted into the roof of a closed cabinet, because a cabinet is a series of obstructions — entries, vents, equipment, cable bundles — and each of them is resistance the fan has to push against. The figure that results in a real installation is lower, and how much lower depends on the cabinet rather than on the fan.

Every fan specification anywhere has this problem. What is unusual is a listing that says so. The other measured unit on this shelf publishes a range and never qualifies it; the five remaining listings publish no airflow at all.

Reading it correctly does not make the number less useful. It makes it comparable, which is the whole point.

Two units for one figure

The same bullet publishes cubic metres per minute and cubic metres per hour: 9.2 and 552.

They are the same measurement multiplied by sixty, which sounds redundant and is not. Makers use both, and a buyer holding two datasheets in different units has to convert one of them before the comparison means anything. Publishing both removes the step, and it removes the most common error on this shelf.

The one comparison that still needs work is with the other measured unit here, which publishes cubic feet per minute. Metric and imperial are not the same scale, and the numbers look nothing like each other.

Sixty to sixty-five decibels

This is the loudest figure in this hub, and it is published rather than hidden.
