Three hundred and forty millimetres, which is the number that matters

Every cabinet on this shelf publishes how deep it is. This one publishes how deep the thing inside it may be.

Four hundred millimetres of cabinet, up to 340 mm of equipment. The third bullet names what it has in mind — switches, servers, patch panels, CCTV recorders — and that is the sentence a buyer measures against with a tape in one hand and a switch in the other.

The difference between the two numbers is the door, the frame and the rail assembly, and on most listings it is left as an exercise. Three of the seven cabinets in this hub publish an internal or usable figure of any kind, and this is one of them.

One thing is still missing from the 340 mm, and it catches people: a power lead plugged into the rear of a switch does not turn through ninety degrees at the socket. Leave room for the plug and the first bend of the cable, or the door meets it.
