Six drives by name

The second bullet does something none of the other five enclosures on this shelf attempts: it names the drives.

A list like that is worth having because bridge chips and drives do not always agree, and a maker willing to print six model numbers is a maker who has put those six in the case. For anyone holding one of them, the compatibility question is closed before it is asked.

For anyone holding something else, it is a list rather than a specification — and the specification it stands in for is the one below.

The lengths that are not there

M.2 drives come in four standard lengths and every other NVMe listing in this hub names all four.

This one names none. There is no 2230, no 2242, no 2260, no 2280 anywhere on the page.

That matters mechanically rather than electrically. A short drive has to reach a standoff at the right position and a long one has to fit the case at all, and a buyer who pulled a 2242 module out of a small laptop has nothing here to check against. The six drives named are all full-length parts, which hints at an answer without giving one.

The pad, the aluminium and the light

The fourth and fifth bullets cover the two things an NVMe enclosure is actually judged on.

Heat first: an aluminium housing with a built-in thermal pad, which is the pairing that gets warmth out of the controller and into the metal. Four of the six enclosures on this shelf name a pad or a heatsink; this is one of them.

Then the LED. It sounds trivial and it answers a question that comes up every time — is it doing anything? A sealed aluminium box with no light is a box that looks identical whether it is copying a hundred gigabytes or has quietly dismounted itself. Two listings on this shelf mention a status indicator.

Nine hundred and fifty of something

The first bullet gives the read and write speed as up to 950 Mbit/s, in the same sentence as the 10 Gbps interface figure.

The unit printed is megabits. Nine hundred and fifty megabits per second would be under a tenth of the interface class quoted beside it, which is an unusual thing for a maker to advertise; the same number read as megabytes per second would sit comfortably under a ten-gigabit ceiling.

This page prints what the listing prints. The distinction is a factor of eight, and if the throughput is the reason for the purchase it is worth a question to the seller.

Before ordering

Ask which drive lengths the case accepts, because the page never says and the six drives it names are all one length. Confirm what the USB-C port on the computer actually is — the 10 Gbps figure assumes a fast one. And ask what lead is in the box, since none is named.
