OM4, and the five rates it is quoted against

No other listing on this shelf publishes a table like the one in the second bullet.

Five rates, each with its own distance, each with the ethernet standard it belongs to written out beside it. A hundred gigabit at 150 m. Forty at 150 m. Twenty-five at 100 m. Ten at 400 m. One at 550 m.

Read it and the shape of multimode becomes obvious: distance falls away as the rate climbs, and it falls away steeply. The same glass that carries a gigabit half a kilometre carries a hundred gigabit less than a third as far.

None of it applies to a 2 m lead, and that is not the point. The table is how a buyer decides whether OM4 is the right grade for the cabinet at all, and it names the standards rather than leaving the reader to match rates to designations.

Five leads in one box

This is a pack rather than a lead, and it changes what the purchase is for.

A single fibre lead is a link. Five identical 2 m leads are a patch field — a switch and a patch panel wired across in one afternoon, with a spare left in the drawer. Anyone joining two SFP+ cages once should buy something else; anyone populating a cabinet has exactly the right order here.

The other pack on this shelf is the four-pack of transceivers, and the pairing is not a coincidence: this is equipment for the kind of job that needs several of everything.

The measurement report in the packet

The fifth bullet says every lead ships with its own test or measurement protocol, because all of them go through a quality control after production.

That is a different claim from a specification. A specification describes what the design is meant to do; a measurement report describes what this piece actually did before it was boxed. When a link later runs badly, the report is what separates a lead that left the factory out of tolerance from one that has been trodden on since.

Two listings in this hub say they supply one. This is the one that supplies five.

The line that is missing on five leads at once

Polarity. The fourth bullet names a fibre marking and never says what the marking says.

On a duplex lead, the pair has to arrive the right way round or the transceivers talk past each other, and the listing that solves this properly — further along this shelf — embosses A and B into the clip and says so. Here there is a marking of some kind, described in three words, on five leads in one box.

It is a small job to sort out with a tester and an adjustable clip. It is a smaller job still when the page tells you.

Before ordering

Confirm the run is multimode, since five of the seven leads on this shelf are single-mode and the two families do not interchange. Check the polish at the far end: these are UPC, and a UPC face cannot be mated to an angled one. Then decide whether you want five — the per-lead economics only work if the fifth one gets used.
