One measurement on a shelf of six

Five listings in this hub publish no dimension whatever. This one publishes 19.35 by 14.8 mm, and it is worth being exact about what those numbers are. They are the keystone opening: the rectangular aperture at the face, the shape that has to match the cutout in a plate or a panel.

That is a real fact and it confirms a real thing — the module clips into a standard frame. It is not the fit problem this hub keeps naming. A plate that will not sit flat against a wall is a module too long for the box behind it, and length is precisely what these two figures do not describe. The dimension that decides is the one still missing, on the only page here that measures anything at all.

Solid, AWG 22 to 25, and nothing else

The wire acceptance is stated at the end of the fifth bullet and it is narrow in two directions. Solid conductors only, which rules out stranded patch stock entirely. And a four-gauge span, AWG 22 to 25, which is narrower than the ranges two other modules here publish.

Narrow is not the same as bad. A module built for one construction can be built more tightly around it, and solid installation cable is what most keystone modules meet. But it does mean the check has to be made before the packet is opened, and it means a run made up from an offcut of patch cable will not terminate here.

Marked on the piece, not on the box

Two details in the fifth bullet are the kind that show up on the job. The wiring order for both standards is printed on the load piece itself, so the colour sequence is in front of you at the moment you need it rather than on a leaflet in a van. And the housing is stated to be one piece and reusable, which means a module wired to the wrong standard can be opened and done again rather than binned.

The cable can be brought in through 180 degrees, which is the other thing that decides whether a module can be terminated in a crowded panel bay or has to be pulled out first.

Panel arithmetic

Twenty-four modules in a 1U panel of 483 mm is the density figure, and it is published here rather than left to be counted. Four modules to a packet means six packets fill a panel, which is a useful thing to know before ordering and an annoying thing to discover afterwards.

Before ordering

Confirm the cable is solid and lands between AWG 22 and 25, since both halves of that are stated and both exclude common alternatives. Then treat the published aperture as what it is — a front measurement — and check the depth of the back box yourself, because the dimension that governs a flush fit is not on this page either.
