Thirty metres and a 7.5 millimetre bend radius

This is the longest lead in this hub, and it is the only long one that publishes the figure a long lead most needs.

Thirty metres does not travel in a straight line. It goes round a door frame, down a skirting board, behind a wardrobe and into whatever coil of slack ends up behind the router. Every one of those is a bend, and fibre is unforgiving about bends in a way copper is not: past a certain radius the light stops following the core and the link degrades.

The first bullet gives 7.5 mm as the minimum, and names the fibre conformity that allows it — G.657.A2 and B2, the bend-tolerant single-mode specifications. Only one other lead on this shelf prints a bend radius at all, and it is a metre long.

White in the title, yellow in the fourth bullet

The colour is stated three times and it is not the same colour.

The title says white. The first bullet says white, twice — once describing the connectors and once on a line of its own. The fourth bullet describes the lead in a yellow-coloured sheath, with OS2 in brackets after it.

On fibre this is not a matter of taste. Jacket colour is the field convention for telling glass apart in a drawer or a tray: single-mode has a colour, multimode has others, and the whole point is that a lead can be identified without reading a label. A page that gives two answers has given none.

Both are printed here because both are on the listing. Which arrives is a question for the seller.

LSZH outside, PVC inside

The second disagreement is smaller and it is about material.

The first bullet names an LSZH sheath — low smoke, zero halogen — which is the rating that decides whether a cable may be run through a public building or an escape route. The third bullet describes the outer sheath as a halogen-free flame-retardant copolymer, which agrees, and then names an inner sheath of PVC, which is the one material an LSZH claim is normally made against.

There is a reading in which both are true, because a cable can have layers with different jobs. The page does not offer that reading or any other. It states LSZH in one place, PVC in another, and leaves them side by side.

The measurement report and the dust caps

The fourth bullet is the compensating one. Every lead is individually packed, fitted with dust caps and supplied with a measurement report.

That last item is the useful one on a 30 m lead. There are no loss figures anywhere on this page — no insertion loss, no return loss, no decibel of any kind — so the only quantified statement about this particular piece of glass is the one that ships inside the packet with it.

Dust caps matter more than they sound, too. A connector face that has spent a delivery collecting dust is a connector face with loss on it, and on thirty metres there is enough loss in the run already.

Before ordering

Ask which colour arrives, because the page says two and the colour is how the lead will be identified in five years. Confirm both sockets are APC. Then plan the route with 7.5 mm in mind — the figure is generous, and it is generous only until the lead is folded round a door frame and pinned there.
