The first bullet gives the ceiling as 20 TB, against 6 TB on the three 2.5-inch enclosures here and 8 TB at the top of the M.2 shelf. That is the entire case for a 3.5-inch enclosure in one number: desktop mechanisms hold a great deal more than anything that fits in a pocket, and this is the box that will read the largest of them.
The capitals at the start
The first bullet opens by shouting that no drive is included.
That deserves respect rather than mockery. The single commonest disappointment in this whole family is a parcel arriving with an empty case in it, because the photographs show a drive, the title says the capacity the enclosure supports, and a distracted reader takes one for the other.
Two listings in this lot say so explicitly. This one says it first, in capitals, and repeats it in the delivery list at the bottom.
The adapter, and what it means for the desk
The third and fifth bullets both name a 12 V/2 A EU mains adapter.
A 3.5-inch drive cannot run from a USB port — it draws too much, especially spinning up — so this is not an accessory but a requirement, and an enclosure of this size arriving without one is unusable.
It also changes what the object is. The 2.5-inch enclosures on this shelf are pocket things powered by the lead. This is a two-part device with a power brick attached, and both parts have to live somewhere. That is the real trade of the 3.5-inch format, and it comes with the 20 TB rather than instead of it.
The contents list
The fifth bullet counts five things: the enclosure, the adapter, a USB 3.0 data cable, a manual and a service card.
Very few listings in this lot itemise a delivery. It removes the two questions that otherwise have to be asked — is the cable in the box, is the adapter in the box — and it does so without a word of marketing.
What the list does not do is say what is on the end of the cable. No Type-C, no Type-B, no Micro-B appears anywhere on the page, and on a USB 3.0 enclosure of this age the socket could reasonably be any of several. It is the one line missing from an otherwise complete account.
Five gigabits, and when that matters
USB 3.0 at 5 Gbit/s is the slowest interface on this shelf.
For the drive this enclosure is built around it makes almost no difference. A spinning 3.5-inch mechanism reads and writes well below that ceiling, so the disc is the limit and the port has room to spare.
It matters if a solid-state drive goes in instead, which the first bullet permits. There the interface becomes the narrow part of the chain, and the ten-gigabit enclosures earlier on this shelf are the ones that would let it run.
Before ordering
Ask what socket the supplied cable has at the computer end, because the page never says. Make room for the adapter as well as the enclosure. And if the drive going in is solid-state rather than spinning, this is not the interface for it.
