Category 6: a grade, not a speed

A category is a set of transmission limits that a finished link has to meet. It is written about frequency, loss and crosstalk, and it says nothing at all about what the equipment plugged into each end will negotiate — which is the source of most of what gets claimed for it.

What the standard defines

Category 6 is a performance grade for balanced twisted-pair cabling. ANSI/TIA writes it as a Category in its 568 series; ISO/IEC 11801 writes the equivalent grade as Class E. Both express the same thing: a set of transmission limits — insertion loss, near-end crosstalk, return loss and several others — that components and finished links must meet, specified across a frequency range up to 250 MHz.

The unit the grade applies to is the channel: everything between the equipment at one end and the equipment at the other. The conventional arrangement is up to ninety metres of fixed horizontal cable between an outlet and a patch panel, plus patch cords at each end, for a hundred metres in total. Nothing in that hundred metres is exempt. A Category 6 cable terminated onto Category 5e modules produces a Category 5e channel, and a channel is only as good as the part of it that measures worst.

The published categories are written around solid copper conductors, with the horizontal run made of solid cable and the flexible patch cords of stranded.

What it does not promise

It does not promise a data rate. A category describes what a link can carry; the rate is negotiated by the equipment at the ends, and a Category 6 channel with a hundred-megabit switch on it runs at a hundred megabits.

It does not promise ten gigabits over the full hundred metres. That case is addressed by separate published guidance for installations that already exist, the reach it allows is substantially shorter, and how much shorter depends on alien crosstalk — coupling between one cable and the others bundled beside it, which Category 6 does not specify. Category 6A exists precisely because that gap needed closing.

It does not promise anything about a cable whose jacket merely says so. The number printed on a sheath is a claim by whoever printed it; the grade is a property of the installed link, and the instrument that confirms it is a cable tester rather than a label.

And it does not cover conductors that are not copper. Cable sold with a copper-clad aluminium core sits outside the published categories however it is marked.

What it works alongside

It uses the same eight-position modular connector as the categories below and above it, so a Category 6 channel accepts anything that plugs into one — and carries a gigabit link comfortably over a full hundred-metre channel. It also carries power delivered over the same pairs, since the power standards are written to run across balanced cabling of this grade and better. Mixed with lower-grade components, it grades down to them.

The questions that come up before an order

Is a Category 6 cable enough for a ten-gigabit link?

Not over the length a channel is otherwise built to. Ten-gigabit operation over installed Category 6 is covered by separate published guidance rather than by the category itself, the usable reach is well short of the full channel, and how short depends on interference from neighbouring cables in the same bundle.

Does using Category 6 cable make the link Category 6?

Only if every part of it is. The grade applies to the channel — cable, outlets, panel terminations and patch cords together — and the finished link performs to the weakest component in it.
