Two and a half to two hundred metres

A distance, printed with both ends of its range. Every other instrument on this shelf answers whether a run is broken. This one answers where. Does reporting a length certify an installation?

No, and the difference is the one worth insisting on. A length figure says how far along a run something sits, which is what saves the ladder work. Certifying an installation means measuring its electrical performance against the published limits of a category and issuing a result, and that is a separate class of instrument at a separate price. What is a visual fault locator for?

It puts visible light into a fibre so that a break or a sharp bend shows as a glow through the jacket. It is the simplest fibre diagnostic there is and it finds the faults that a power meter only reports as a loss. Having both on one instrument is what lets a fibre patch lead be judged without a second bag of equipment.
