The questions that come up before an order

What is lost without a remote unit?

The ability to test a run that is already installed. A remote sits in the socket at the far end and answers for it, so one person can check a cable that disappears into a wall. Without one, both ends of the lead have to reach the instrument, which means a patch lead on a bench rather than a run through a building.

Why test a FireWire or USB lead at all?

Because the failure is the same failure: a conductor that does not reach the other end, or reaches the wrong pin. Those leads are usually thrown away rather than tested, and a unit that checks them turns a drawer of unknown cables into a small pile of good ones and a smaller pile for the bin.
