What does MTBF tell me about a hard drive?

This is the most misread number on a drive specification, and the misreading is always in the same direction.

What the figure is derived from

MTBF, mean time between failures, is produced from testing a large number of units under defined conditions — temperature, workload, power cycles — and expressing how frequently failures occur across that population. It is quoted in hours, and the conditions are published with it because the figure has no meaning without them.

It applies within a specified operating period. Outside that period, it is not making any claim at all.

Why the hours mislead

Read as though it were a duration, the number suggests a drive running for a length of time that nobody has ever observed. That reading is simply wrong: the figure is about how often failures happen across many drives, not about how long one lasts.

The same information as an annualised failure rate — a percentage of a population failing in a year — is far harder to misread, which is why some makers publish it that way. The two are describing the same property.

What it is genuinely useful for

Comparing two models from the same maker, since the same methodology produced both figures.

Sizing an array’s risk in a rough sense: more drives means more opportunities for one to fail, and the redundancy level is chosen against that.

Nothing about your drive. A specific unit fails when it fails. Manufacturing variation, transport, the power it received, the temperature it ran at and simple chance all sit outside the statistic.

Where it sits among the other figures

MTBF is a population statistic. TBW is a written volume specified for a solid-state drive. Workload rate is an amount of data read and written per year that a mechanical drive is specified against. Warranty length is a commercial undertaking with conditions of its own.

Four separate published figures describing four separate things, and it is worth keeping them in four separate columns rather than fusing them into an impression of durability. A drive that publishes all four is being specified; one that publishes a single large-looking number is being advertised.

What to do with the information instead

Assume every drive will fail and design around that assumption. That means a redundancy level if the machine has to keep serving, and a second copy on separate hardware regardless — because the redundancy addresses the failure of a drive and nothing else.

Then watch the drives’ own reported health rather than the specification sheet. A drive reporting reallocated sectors or a rising error count is telling you something about itself, which is more than any published statistic can do.

Every rate, capacity, class figure, endurance rating, port speed and power figure on this page is reported from the manufacturer's own documentation, with its unit written as published, and named as such — none of it is measured here. Because they are not a prediction that one drive runs for that long. The figure describes how often failures occur across a large population within its specified operating period, and dividing it into years for a single unit is the misreading it invites. The conditions it was derived under are published beside it.

Is AFR a different figure?

Annualised failure rate is the same information presented as a percentage of a population failing per year, which many people find easier to read correctly. Some makers publish one, some the other, and some both — and all of them are about a population rather than about a unit.
