What does a workload rating in TB per year mean?

It is the specification that most cleanly separates a drive built for a network enclosure from one built for a desktop.

What the figure covers

An annual workload rate states the total amount of data transferred to and from the drive across a year, counting both reading and writing. Makers of drives intended for continuous duty publish it; makers of desktop drives generally do not.

Two things about it are worth being precise on. It counts reads as well as writes, which surprises people who expect it to work like a solid-state drive’s written volume. And it is a rating, meaning the conditions the drive was specified under — not a counter that stops the drive when it is exceeded.

Why a network enclosure reaches it faster than a desktop

A desktop drive spends most of its existence idle. A drive in an enclosure does not, and the work it does is largely invisible.

Scheduled integrity checks read the whole array on a timetable. Backups arriving overnight write steadily for hours. Media served to the household reads continuously while anything is playing. And a rebuild reads every remaining member from end to end, which is a substantial fraction of an annual allowance in a single operation.

Add several people, several devices and a machine that never sleeps, and the total is nothing like a desktop’s.

How it fits with the other endurance figures

Workload rate is an annual quantity of transfer for a mechanical drive. TBW is a lifetime written volume for a solid-state one. MTBF is a population statistic in hours. Warranty length is a commercial term.

They are four separate published figures, they are published separately because they describe separate things, and none of them is a statement about how long a particular drive will keep working. A specification sheet listing all four is doing its job; a listing quoting one large number is doing something else.

What a missing figure tells you

A drive sold for a NAS that does not publish a workload rate has not been specified against one. That is not proof it will misbehave, but it removes the line you would otherwise have compared, and it usually accompanies the absence of a rotational vibration specification too.

Enclosure makers publish compatibility lists partly for this reason. A drive on the list has been qualified in that chassis; a drive that is not on it may still work perfectly and has not been checked by anyone.

Using the figure sensibly

Estimate your own annual transfer from what the machine reports rather than from a guess, and compare it against the ratings of the drives you are considering. For most households the answer is comfortable, and the exercise takes ten minutes.

Where it is not comfortable — many users, continuous media, frequent large backups — the higher-rated ranges exist for that, and choosing one is the specification doing exactly what it was published for.

A stated capacity is reported as the maker counts it, and is never restated in another unit, because the two are not the same figure. And for anything sold with a lifespan implied: TBW, MTBF and warranty length are three different published figures, and none of them is how long a drive will last. Enclosure software and drive utilities report cumulative totals, and watching them across a month gives a figure that reflects your own use. Scheduled integrity checks and overnight backups usually account for far more of it than anything anyone does during the day.

Why do desktop drives not publish one?

Because they are not specified for continuous duty and the figure would not be flattering. Its absence is information: a drive without a published workload rating has not been specified against one, which is a reason it belongs in a desktop rather than in a chassis with several drives working through the night.
