The spare blade

One item in this box appears nowhere else in this hub, and it is the smallest thing in it. A replacement blade.

The buying tip on this hub says the trimmer dulls long before the jaws do, and it is right: crimping jaws close on soft plastic and metal and last for thousands of cycles, while the edge that scores a sheath and cuts eight conductors flat is working against copper every time. A tool whose blade cannot be renewed becomes, in the end, a tool that crimps properly and prepares cable badly.

Nothing on the page says how the blade is changed or whether more can be bought. What it says is that one is in the box, and that is one more than any other listing here offers.

Twenty guides for twenty plugs

The count in the fourth bullet is worth noticing. Ten Cat6a plugs, ten Cat7 plugs, twenty insertion guides, twenty boots. One guide and one boot per plug, which is the ratio that makes sense and is not the ratio every kit uses.

An insertion guide is consumed with the plug it lines up — it goes into the body and stays there. Supplying half as many as there are plugs means half the plugs get made the hard way, with eight conductors held in order by fingers. Here the arithmetic is right.

Two categories of plug in one order

Splitting the twenty across Cat6a and Cat7 bodies is unusual and it is practical. Those bodies are different sizes and they suit different cable, so a buyer working on more than one run does not have to decide in advance which category the whole packet will be spent on.

What the page never says is what the jaws are cut for in position terms — 8P8C is nowhere on it, and neither is any other notation. So the plugs supplied establish the compatibility by example, and anything else has to be asked about.

What is not here

No tester. No punch-down tool. Four kits on this shelf carry a tester and three carry a punch-down tool, and this is the only one carrying neither while charging the most.

That is a coherent proposition for one kind of buyer — somebody with a tester already on the bench, buying a tool, a bag of consumables and a spare edge — and an incomplete one for somebody starting out, who would finish this order with no way to prove a lead works.

Ask what the jaws are cut for, since the page names cable categories rather than position counts.
