Why is my new external drive not showing up?

Take it in order. The first three checks cost nothing and settle most cases.

Is it a data lead?

Leads that carry power only are sold in enormous numbers and look exactly like leads that carry data. Use the one that came with the enclosure, or one you know works for data.

While you are there, try a different port on the machine, and try a port on the machine itself rather than on a hub or a monitor.

Is it getting enough power?

A 2.5-inch enclosure normally runs from the host connection. A 3.5-inch one needs its own power supply, because a large mechanical drive draws more than a host port supplies — which is why the two are separate products rather than two sizes of one.

Symptoms of insufficient power are distinctive: a drive that appears and disappears, that clicks or spins up repeatedly, or that works on one machine and not another. If the enclosure has a supply, use it. If it is bus-powered and marginal, a port directly on the machine is better than one on a hub.

Has it ever been prepared?

A drive with no partition table and no filesystem will not appear in a file manager, because there is nothing there to show. It will appear in the machine’s disk management tool as an uninitialised or unallocated device.

That is the normal state of a bare drive, and creating a partition and a filesystem is all that is needed. A drive formatted for a different operating system is the related case: it exists, the machine can see it, and it cannot read it.

Is the drive itself alive?

Listen. A mechanical drive that spins up and then clicks repeatedly, or that does not spin at all, is reporting something the software cannot.

If the drive matters, stop at this point. Repeated attempts to mount a failing mechanical drive can make a recovery harder, and that decision — whether the contents are worth a professional attempt — is much easier to make before another twenty power cycles.

Is it the enclosure rather than the drive?

An external drive is a drive and a bridge, and the bridge fails too. Taking the drive out and connecting it directly to a machine, or putting it in another enclosure, separates the two.

Note one thing before doing that: some enclosures write the drive in a way that only that enclosure understands, particularly where hardware encryption is involved. The maker states whether the drive is readable elsewhere, and it is worth knowing before you are relying on it.

And the lesson underneath

A drive that will not appear is a reminder of how much depends on one object. Whatever ends up on it, the second copy lives somewhere else — that is the difference between this being an annoying evening and being something worse.

A great deal. Leads sold for charging often carry power and nothing else, and they are physically identical to data leads. Using the lead the enclosure came with, or a known data lead, eliminates the single most common cause of a drive that behaves as though it were not connected.
