Do I need a mesh system or a single router?

Two products are being compared here, and only one of them is really about radios.

What a single router is being asked to do

A router routes the connection arriving from the line, hands out wired sockets and runs the radios, and the radios are the part with a distance limit. That limit is set by the building rather than by the specification sheet: plasterboard costs a signal little, brick and a wet wall cost it a great deal, and a foil-backed insulation board or a metal-framed stud partition can stop a 5 GHz channel almost dead.

A single router is the right answer when the awkward rooms are within reach of it. It is also the cheaper answer, the simpler one to configure and the one with fewer things to go wrong, and none of those are small advantages.

What a mesh pack adds, and what it spends

A mesh pack is two or three units that present one network name and hand devices between themselves as people move around. What it adds is placement: a radio can now sit in the room that had no signal, which is something no amount of class figure on a single unit achieves.

What it spends is airtime. Unless the nodes are wired, the traffic reaching a device at the far node has crossed the air twice — once from the router to the node, once from the node to the device. Dual-band packs do that on the same 5 GHz radio the clients are using, so the two share what is available. Tri-band packs keep a radio aside for the link between nodes, which is what the extra band on the carton is for.

Wired backhaul changes the answer completely

If any node can sit near an Ethernet outlet, the comparison stops being about radios. A wired node relays nothing; it simply is a second access point on the same network, and the pack behaves like a properly cabled installation.

That is also the moment to ask whether a mesh pack is the right purchase at all. A wired access point does the same job, mounts on a ceiling, takes its power from the cable and is specified in published terms — the PoE type it needs, the uplink port speed, the mounting plate. The mesh pack’s advantage over it is that it works without cabling; where cabling exists, that advantage is spent.

Reading the two boxes side by side

Four lines are comparable between a router and a mesh pack, and the class figure is not one of them.

Wi-Fi generation and its IEEE designation — 802.11ax, 802.11be — which is the honest version of the marketing name. Band plan: how many radios, on which bands, and whether one is reserved for the backhaul. Stream count, written 2×2 or 4×4, which is the plainest description of the radio. Ethernet ports: how many on each unit, at what speed, and whether the WAN socket is separate from the LAN ones.

The covered area in square metres is the least standardised number in the category, because it comes from the maker’s own assumptions about walls and no two makers assume the same building.

When neither one is the fix

If the trouble is in a single room behind a single stubborn wall, an access point or a node placed just outside that wall solves it and a bigger router does not. If the trouble is that everything is slow at once and the wired sockets are slow too, the ceiling is somewhere else in the chain — the line, an old switch, a machine with a gigabit adapter — and no wireless purchase moves it.

The questions that come up before an order

Can I add mesh nodes to the router I already own?

Only inside one maker’s own system, and only for the models it lists. Most mesh packs coordinate through an arrangement the maker keeps to itself, so nodes from two brands do not form one network. The exception is equipment certified under the Wi-Fi Alliance’s EasyMesh programme, which exists precisely to make that mixture possible.

Does a mesh node have to talk to the router over the air?

No, and this is the setting most people miss. Mesh systems accept a wired backhaul: plug a node into an Ethernet outlet and the link carrying traffic back to the router stops consuming airtime. Where a cable can be run to even one node, the pack does noticeably less work.
