The generation that is not on the page

Five bullets and a title, and not one of them says USB 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2.

That is unusual enough to lead with. Every other drive in this hub names a generation, most of them in the title, because a generation is the shorthand a buyer scans for: it says which class of link the connector belongs to and therefore what class of port to look for on the machine.

A hundred megabytes a second, direction unstated

The second bullet gives up to 100 MB/s and does not say for what.

Where only one figure appears on a flash drive, it is the reading one in almost every case: reading is what flash memory does well, and it is the number a datasheet leads with. This page reports the figure as published rather than reassigning it to a direction the maker did not name.

What the same bullet does supply is the qualification, and it is better than most: performance varies with the host device, with the interface and with the conditions of use, and the figure comes from Lexar’s own internal testing. That is an attribution rather than a claim about the buyer’s machine, and it is reported as such.

The bullet closes with something small and unusually straightforward — a definition of the unit. One megabyte, it says, is 1,000,000 bytes. That single line is the reason the capacity on the label is a decimal figure and the reason a computer displays something lower.

Seventy point four by sixteen point nine by eleven point seven

The third bullet measures the object.

Length, width and depth to a tenth of a millimetre, a weight of 26 g, and an operating range from 0 °C to 50 °C. Four of the seven listings on this shelf publish no dimensions of any kind, so knowing that this drive is seven centimetres long is a real piece of information — a long body blocks the socket beside it on a laptop, and a dual-connector drive is longer than a single-plug one by design.

The temperature range is not a weather rating. It says what the electronics are specified to work within, and there is no IP code anywhere on the page.

The cap that turns instead of coming off

The fourth bullet solves the oldest problem in this family.

A dual-connector drive has an exposed contact at each end, and the usual answer is a loose cap that gets left on a desk. Here the cap rotates through 360° on the body: it covers whichever plug is not in use and it never comes away.

The three years, and the encryption beside it

Check the length against the sockets on your laptop if they sit close together.
