1310 nanometres, single-mode, and the grade nobody writes

The wavelength is printed, the distance is printed, and the glass they assume is not. Single-mode appears in the title and in the second bullet. What never appears is the grade — OS1 or OS2 — that says which single-mode fibre the 10 km figure was worked out over.

Three of the five optical modules on this shelf have the same hole in the same place. It is not a small one: a distance claim is a claim about a length of glass, and the glass has a specification of its own that the module cannot supply.
