How deep does a rack cabinet need to be?

Cabinets are advertised by height in rack units and by external dimensions. Neither of those is the number that decides whether your equipment goes in.

The three depths on a specification sheet

External depth is the footprint on the floor or the projection from the wall. It decides where the cabinet can live, and nothing else.

Usable or mounting depth is the distance available between the front and rear mounting rails. This is the figure that has to exceed the depth of your deepest device.

Rail adjustment range is how far the rear rails can be moved. Deep cabinets usually have adjustable rear rails; shallow wall boxes often have front rails only, and equipment is held at the front alone or sits on a shelf.

What has to fit in that space

Start with the deepest device, from its mounting ears to its rearmost point. Then add what stands off behind it, because that is what people leave out.

Power leads need a bend radius behind the socket. A moulded plug entering straight back needs more room than an angled one.

Patch leads need their own bend radius at the front, and a boot on an eight-position plug adds to the length beyond the socket.

Fibre patch leads need considerably more: a bend tighter than the cable’s published minimum radius degrades the link, and that minimum is published by the cable maker.

Airflow needs the rest. Equipment that draws air front to back needs the back to be somewhere it can exhaust.

Width is standardised, which is why nobody asks about it

The mounting rails are spaced to the 19-inch standard, and equipment sold as rack-mount is built to it. What varies between cabinets is the space either side of the rails, which is where vertical cable managers and power strips live, and shallow wall boxes frequently have none of it.

The wall-mounted case, which is most home installations

A wall cabinet is where a home network usually ends up, and it is where depth bites hardest. Patch panels are shallow. Small switches are shallow. A router laid on a shelf is shallow. But a full-depth switch, a rack-mounted UPS or a short-depth server is not, and the moment one of those appears in the plan, the cabinet has to have been chosen for it.

Two further points about wall boxes. They are usually hinged, so the cabinet swings away from the wall for access behind it, and that swing needs clearance in the room. And the weight they carry is limited by the fixings into the wall, which is a matter for the cabinet maker’s instructions and the wall in question.

Heat, which depth also governs

A cabinet with the door closed is a box. Passive vents work when the equipment inside is modest and the room is not warm; beyond that, cabinets take fan panels, and the fan panel is both the solution to the heat and the reason the cabinet is now audible from the next room.

Depth helps here too: equipment with room behind it is not blowing its exhaust into the back of its own intake.

Before ordering

Three numbers and one habit. The usable depth of the cabinet, the published depth of your deepest device, and the rack units you need, counting the ones you will add later. The habit is to add the cable standoff to the equipment depth rather than to hope, because that is the millimetre that stops a door closing.

What does 1U mean, and how tall is it?

A rack unit is the vertical increment of the mounting rails, 44.45 mm, and equipment is sold by how many of them it occupies. A cabinet described as 12U has twelve of those increments of mounting height, which is a different figure from its external height.

Is a wall-mounted cabinet deep enough for a switch?

For a small unmanaged switch on a shelf, usually. For a full-depth managed switch or a rack-mounted server, frequently not: shallow wall cabinets are built around patch panels and small equipment. The usable depth in the specification is the number that answers it, and equipment depth is published too.
