How the protection works, in one paragraph

The usual components divert energy away from the equipment when the voltage rises above a threshold. Each diversion stresses them, and the stress is cumulative: a component that has absorbed several events is not the component it was when new.

Degradation is quiet. The device continues to pass power and continues to look exactly the same. What has changed is what it will do next time.

What the joule rating actually describes

It is a measure of energy the device can absorb before it stops protecting, not a measure of how large a single event it survives and not a promise of a service life. Two units with the same rating can be built very differently and behave differently in use.

Read it as one specification among several rather than as a score. The clamping voltage the maker publishes says how high the voltage is allowed to go before diversion begins, and the response time, where it is given, says how quickly. Those describe the protection; the joule figure describes how much of it there is to spend.

Why the indicator matters more than the rating

A unit with a protection-status indicator tells you it has stopped protecting. A unit without one does not, and the failure mode is that people keep plugging equipment into a strip that has been an ordinary extension lead for years.

Some units go further and disconnect the outlets when protection is exhausted, which is the unambiguous version of the same idea. The maker’s instructions describe what its own lights and behaviours mean, and that description is the one to follow.

What a protector does not cover

A direct strike is not what these devices are for, and no plug-in unit claims otherwise.

Every path into the equipment. A surge can arrive along an aerial lead, a telephone line or a network cable between buildings as readily as along the mains. Units that protect additional paths say which paths they protect.

A power cut. Protection and continuity are separate functions, which is why a UPS and a protector are separate products even when they share a housing.

The data. Equipment that survives an event has not necessarily finished the write it was performing, which is a different argument and the argument for a UPS.

Replacement, and where the line is

Replace on the indicator, replace after a known severe event, and replace a unit whose age is unknown. Beyond that, everything about installation, siting, what may be plugged into what, and anything touching the building’s wiring belongs to the manufacturer’s own instructions and to a qualified electrician — not to a comparison page.

Most UPS units include protection of their own and publish a rating for it, so a separate protector in front of one is usually redundant and can interfere with how the UPS behaves. The maker’s instructions say whether the unit expects to be plugged directly into a wall socket, and that instruction is the authority.
