Usually not, and half-fitted it is worse than unshielded. A screen only works when it is continuous from end to end and bonded to earth through shielded modules and an earthed panel, which is an installation decision rather than a cable purchase.
Shielded cable is bought far more often than it is installed correctly, and the difference between the two is the whole subject.
What a screen is for
A screen — foil around each pair, a braid around the bundle, or both — reduces how much external interference reaches the conductors and how much the cable radiates outwards.
It earns its keep where there is genuine interference to reject: alongside a long parallel run of mains cable, in an industrial environment, near large motors or transmitting equipment, or in a dense bundle carrying high-frequency links where the cables interfere with each other.
Why half-fitting it makes things worse
A screen has to be continuous and it has to be bonded to earth. That means shielded cable, shielded keystone modules or plugs, a shielded patch panel, shielded patch leads, and an earthing path from the panel.
Terminated onto ordinary unshielded outlets, the screen is a length of disconnected metal running through the wall. It has added diameter, stiffness and cost, and it is doing nothing. In some circumstances a screen earthed at one end only can behave in ways nobody intended, which is the reason the standards are specific about bonding.
So the honest question is not whether to buy shielded cable. It is whether you are going to build a shielded channel, every component of it, and connect it properly at the end.
What Category 6A does about interference without a screen
The addition that separates Category 6A from Category 6 is a specified limit on alien crosstalk — coupling between one cable and its neighbours in a bundle or tray. That is the interference most likely to matter in a house, and unshielded Category 6A is specified against it.
Which is why the usual recommendation for a home is straightforward: unshielded Category 6A, terminated onto unshielded modules of the same grade, run sensibly.
Running cable sensibly, which matters more than the screen
Keep separation from mains cable, and cross it at an angle rather than running alongside it for a distance. The separation distances are set by the wiring rules where you are, and those rules are the authority.
Respect the bend radius the cable maker publishes. A tight bend changes the geometry of the pairs and is a real cause of a channel that will not meet its grade.
Do not overtighten cable ties. A tie crushed into the sheath deforms the pairs underneath it, and a channel built entirely from good cable can fail on that alone.
Keep the untwist short at the termination. Every module publishes how much pair may be untwisted, and exceeding it is the single most common installation fault.
When to shield anyway
A long run parallel to a mains circuit that cannot be separated. A route through a plant room or a workshop. A dense bundle of high-frequency links in a small cabinet. In those cases, shield the whole channel — cable, modules, panel, leads and bonding — or do not shield at all.
The questions that come up before an order
Is shielded cable a higher grade than unshielded?
No. Category 6A exists in both shielded and unshielded constructions, and both are the same grade if the finished channel meets the transmission limits. They get there differently, and a screen is a technique rather than a step up.
Does anything about earthing need a qualified person?
Anything involving the building’s electrical installation does, and it is outside what a comparison page should describe. Follow the panel and cabinet maker’s own instructions for bonding, and where those instructions refer to the building’s earthing arrangement, that is a matter for someone qualified to work on it.
