What does a written total of 480 terabytes actually promise?
It states the volume of writing the drive is rated for, which is a specification and not a guarantee that it stops afterwards or survives until then. Ordinary household use writes a small fraction of a figure like that in a year. Where it matters is on a machine that receives large files daily, and where it matters most is in a warranty, because such terms usually end at the period or the total, whichever arrives first. There is no term on this page to bound.
Is two million hours a longer life than one million?
It is a larger statistic, which is not the same claim. Both describe how often failures occur across a population under conditions the maker defines, and neither describes the drive on a desk. Two makers can measure differently, and the figures are comparable only in the loosest sense. The quantity that can be held to is the warranty, and this page does not carry one.
