Amazon Basics 256 GB with a write figure, a usable capacity and three published negatives

The only drive on this shelf publishing a write figure as a figure, and the only one that names its factory file system, its four-gigabyte file limit, its usable capacity and the indicator lamp it does not have.

Capacity
256 GB nominal, with over 230 GB stated as available — the third bullet notes that an operating system may show less than the label because of different measurement standards. It is one of two listings on this shelf publishing a usable figure
USB generation
USB 3.1 Gen 1 — stated in the title and in the first bullet, with the fourth requiring a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 port for the quoted speeds and noting slower operation on USB 2.0 hosts
Stated link rate
Not published on the listing — no figure in gigabits per second appears, only the generation name
Connector type
Type-A — implied by the retractable body and the USB 2.0 backwards compatibility, and never designated on the page
Stated read figure
Up to 130 MB/s — stated in the first and fourth bullets, from internal testing under controlled conditions. The SanDisk Ultra 512 GB on this shelf quotes the same 130
Stated write figure
Up to 30 MB/s — stated in the fourth bullet beside the read figure, a ratio of better than four to one. Several of the seven listings on this shelf publish a write figure, and this is one of them
Body design
Retractable and telescopic, with a keyhole — stated in the fifth bullet, so the connector withdraws into the shell and there is no cap. The seventh bullet states that there is no LED indicator
Keyring provision
A keyhole in the body — stated in the fifth bullet as part of the retractable design
Stated ingress rating
Not published on the listing — no water rating, no dust rating and no IP figure appears
Warranty length
Not published on the listing — no term appears in the title or in any of the eight bullets, which puts this among the three listings on this shelf with none

  • Publishes both figures — 130 MB/s read and 30 MB/s write — where several of the seven listings on this shelf publish no write figure at all
  • The only listing on this shelf that names its file system, and the four-gigabyte file limit FAT32 imposes before reformatting
  • 30 MB/s writing means a large folder takes four times as long to copy on as off, which the page is honest about and does not make faster

Best for: A buyer who wants to know the write speed, the usable space and the file system before ordering, and will reformat it on the first day.

Four things on this page are published that almost nothing else on this shelf publishes, and three of them are limitations.

The first is the write figure. The fourth bullet gives a read speed up to 130 MB/s and a write speed up to 30 MB/s, both from internal testing under controlled conditions. The intro to this section says to look for the write figure rather than the read figure, and several of the seven listings here give one. Thirty against a hundred and thirty is a ratio of better than four to one, which is what a flash drive actually feels like: a quick copy off it and a long wait copying onto it.

The second is the usable capacity. The third bullet states that the capacity shown by an operating system may be less than the label and that the available storage is higher than 230 GB. Two listings on this shelf publish such a figure, this one and the SIMMAX.

The third is the file system, and it is the most practically useful sentence on the shelf. The eighth bullet states that FAT32 is the factory default format, read-and-write compatible with Windows and macOS, and that a file larger than 4 GB requires reformatting to exFAT or NTFS. FAT32 cannot hold a single file above four gigabytes — which is most video files and every disc image — so a 256 GB drive straight out of the packet will refuse a thirty-gigabyte transfer for a reason that looks like a fault. Seven listings sit on this shelf and this is the only one that names its file system at all.

The fourth is the absence. The seventh bullet reads, in full: “Note: No integrated LED light indicator”. Publishing the lack of a lamp is a small thing and nothing else on this shelf does it; one drive here, the Samdata, has one, and five say nothing either way.

The specification around them is ordinary and clearly stated. USB 3.1 Gen 1, with the fourth bullet noting that a USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 port is required for the quoted speeds and that older ports work more slowly. Fifteen times faster than USB 2.0, which given the 130 and 30 figures is a claim with numbers behind it rather than instead of them. The fifth bullet gives a retractable telescopic body with a keyhole, so there is no cap and the connector withdraws into the shell. The sixth claims high-quality NAND flash chips protecting data security, which is a sentence rather than a specification.

The second bullet translates the capacity: 64,000 twelve-megapixel photographs or 978 minutes of 1080p video. At 256 GB that is 4 MB a photograph and about 4.4 MB a minute of video, and both are plausible.

No warranty term appears anywhere, which puts this among the three listings on this shelf with none. At $65.82 for 256 GB this is $0.257 a gigabyte — more than twice the PNY drive of the same capacity on this shelf, which publishes no speed figure at all. That is the trade this shelf offers most clearly: twice the price for knowing what you are getting.

The questions that come up before an order

Why will a large file not copy onto it?

Because it arrives formatted as FAT32, which cannot hold a single file larger than four gigabytes. The eighth bullet says so and says to reformat to exFAT or NTFS. No other listing on this shelf names its file system at all.

How fast does it write?

Up to 30 MB/s, stated in the fourth bullet beside a read speed of up to 130. Several of the seven listings on this shelf publish no write figure, and this ratio is why the intro to this section says to look for it.

How much space will I see?

More than 230 GB of a nominal 256, stated in the third bullet. The difference is decimal counting against units of 1024, plus the file system’s share.
